![]() They were not, and in many ways are still not inclusive. Historically games have been demanding and challenging on our motor skills, cognition, vision, hearing, and even speech. Games are an important case study for accessibility because most games rely heavily on a multisensory physical experience. My personal design perspective has been deeply informed by games, and for me, a lot of the principles that I apply for accessible design stem from there. However, there are some tried and true methods that you can use right now to make sure your designs are considerate. To get better at considering broader perspectives, a respectful design process should be used rather than making assumptions about what works. That’s over a quarter of us, meaning a whole lot of people are getting left out of apps, websites, games, and other digital tools when accessibility isn’t fully considered. According to the CDC, in the US 26% of people experience a disability. Unfortunately, a lot of designs just aren’t useful, or usable for people who experience impairments or disabilities. Accessible design will always create a better, more useful design because people can first and foremost use the design, and because it cuts out the unnecessary barriers that lead to non-functional and frustrating experiences. It’s a design that considers the different paths people may take to access the valuable parts of a product based on their personal experiences, abilities, and impairments. An accessible design is a design where people can meet their goals, and use the design through methods that are comfortable and functional for them. ![]()
